In our effort to encourage the Christian community in using art as an expression of faith, His Witness Ministries (HWM) is pleased to announce the HWM Three Points Art Project.

Our goal is to invite God into this effort and allow Him to direct the outcome by intersecting the gifts and talents of the winning artist in each of the following points (or categories): art, writing and music.

Each artist may enter one, two or all three points of the project.  Winning submissions will be those that are notably inspired by or created to glorify God. Additionally, winning works will demonstrate exceptional God-given talents in the following areas:

    • Biblical Christian message
    • Artistic style and ability
    • Clear and compelling presentation
    • Professional quality

Each project point will be judged by a reputable artist in that field and have three winners (1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place).  Each winner will be featured on www.hiswitness.org as a winning artist and after the winners in all three points have all been identified and announced, HWM will publish a YouTube video featuring the First place talents across all three points in an effort to glorify God.

First place winners in each category will receive $100 cash.  Second place winners in each category will receive $75.00 cash.  Third place winners in each category will receive $25.00 cash.  Entrant retain all ownership rights to all submitted works.

     Judge: Point 1 - ART

Melanie Wade Leslie is Associate Professor in Art at Houston Baptist University where she teaches Art Appreciation and Art History.  Additionally, Melanie serves the university as coordinator of the
Art Forum Mentoring Program and mentors in the Art Guild and Alumni Art Guild.  She is a recipient of Brick in Heritage Walkway and a five-time recipient of Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

    Melanie Wade Leslie discovered printmaking
in college in 1971 and was forever intrigued with the endless possibilities of translating images into fine print format.  In the printing lab she was able to explore the traditional processes of relief, intaglio, collagraphy, lithography and serigraphy as a college art major, never realizing the impact that this fundamental background would ultimately have on her professional oeuvre. Her later employment with a newspaper strengthened her ties to the printmaking process.

"I learned printmaking from a purely fine art perspective, not fully grasping that in the Renaissance, the printing process, though utilizing print artists, had been conceived as a commercial technological advance in the private sector.  When I got to the newspaper and saw the printing process on such a monumental scale, I was awed.  I began learning all I could about the commercial process of offset lithography as well, though my heart has always been moved and inspired by the various techniques of fine art printmaking.

The difference, of course, is that commercial printing is driven by efficiency and mass production, whereas the fine art printmaker is concerned with the aesthetics of an image and the journey of the process, even if each print is pulled painstakingly by hand and never even editioned.

Over the past ten years, my work has been continually evolving from those printed images and elements. I may work with a single image in many different ways before I have exhausted my store of ideas about it. I may work on an image in watercolor and pastel, but my mind is always thinking about how that particular image would work as a woodcut or a collagraph.”
